Nittany Lion Men's Tennis Earns Four Wins in Final Day of the USTA Invitational

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - The Penn State men's tennis picked up four total wins on day two of USTA Invitational on Saturday. The Nittany Lions have completed play at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center and will look forward to the ITA Regional Championships, taking place in mid-October.

In the Flight C singles draw, junior Chris Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.) had a tough 6-3, 6-2 setback to Matt Himmelsbach of Marist. Hasyn however came back with a nice consolation match victory over Fairfield's Joe Michalisin, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Hasyn is 2-1 in singles play so far this weekend.

The Nittany Lions had a pair of representatives in the Flight D bracket quarterfinals in freshman Harry Seaborn (North Salem, N.Y.) and sophomore C.J. Griffin (Portland, Mich.). Seaborn defeated Dartmouth's Jordan Brandon Debot, 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-7), while Griffin lost to Harvard's Mac McAnulty, 6-0, 6-2. With his victory, Seaborn advanced to the semifinals, where he lost a close match to Landon Greene of Marist, 7-6(3), 6-2, 1-0 (10-5). Griffin had to forfeit his consolation match with Tizin Bucher after suffering an ankle injury.

In the Flight E singles quarterfinals, sophomore Guanhau Chen (DaLian, China) lost to Rob Wong of Penn, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7). Chen would bounce back though by tallying a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) consolation win over Sacred Heart's Nick Mazzerese.

In Flight A doubles consolation action, Griffin and Hasyn had an 8-2 setback to the Yale pairing of Erik Blumenkranz and Joel Samaha. In Flight B, Princeton's Alex Faust and Yohei Shoji retired, giving Chen and Hasyn a victory.

The Nittany Lions will have two weeks off before heading to the ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 14-18 in Charlottesville, Va. The squad will close the fall season at the Big Ten Singles tournament from Oct. 28-Nov. 1.
