Men's Tennis to Host Special Olympics Clinic on Wednesday

Oct. 12, 2010

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's tennis team will host its fourth annual tennis clinic for Special Olympics Centre County on Wednesday. The event will take place from 5-7 p.m. at the Sarni Tennis Courts and is free for all Special Olympics Pennsylvania Athletes.

For the past three years, the Nittany Lions hosted this event for the Centre County region of Special Olympics. Michael C. Wolff, Ph.D, an assistant clinical professor of psychology at Penn State and Special Olympics Centre County tennis coach, will join in coordination with the tennis staff. The clinic will run from 5-6:30 p.m. with refreshments to follow until 7 p.m. The rain site will be the indoor courts at the Penn State Tennis Center.

The clinic will give the athletes the opportunity to learn new tennis skills, as well as interact with Penn State men's tennis players.

"The Fall Clinic with the Penn State men's tennis team is a great way for Special Olympics athletes to gain valuable instruction and training with some of the premiere collegiate tennis players in the country," said Wolff in a press release last week. "Every year it is difficult to tell which group of athletes is having more fun; the PSU players or the Special Olympics athletes. There are always broad smiles and laughs on both sides."

The tennis clinic is one of four sports clinics that Penn State athletic teams organize for Special Olympics Centre County during the year. The athletes also get the opportunity to participate in clinics held by the Lady Lion basketball team, the women's volleyball team and the women's soccer team.

The Nittany Lions will head to the ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 20-24 in Charlottesville, Va. The squad will close the fall season at the Big Ten Singles tournament from Oct. 28-Nov. 1.
