NORFOLK, Va.; October 23, 2010 - Sophomore Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) led the Penn State women's tennis team at the ITA Atlantic Regional on Saturday as she picked up two victories, advancing to the quarterfinals. Januskova will play the tournament's second seed, Virginia's Erin Vierra, on Sunday.
Januskova defeated Richmond's Elizabeth Sims, 6-2, 6-2, and Virginia's Caryssa Peretz, 6-2, 6-1, in Saturday's action.
Junior Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) picked up a second round victory against Jeltje Loomans of William & Mary in a walkover, but fell to Virginia's Emily Fraser, 6-1, 6-0, in the third.
Freshman Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada), who won two games to qualify for the main draw, lost to Virginia Tech's Yazmin Hamza, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round. Sophomore Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) was bested by Virginia's Hana Tomljanovic, 6-4, 6-3.
In third round doubles action, Januskova and Simidian were defeated by Virginia's Lindsey Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra, 8-2.
Also competing today was freshman Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada), who won an exhibition match against Virginia Tech's Isel Martinez-Marcos, 6-2, 6-1.
Januskova will play her quarterfinals match tomorrow at 9 a.m. The Nittany Lions will be back in action Nov. 4, at the National Indoors in Flushing, N.Y.
