CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Penn State women's swimming & diving team held tough and captured a slew of second-place finishes, but the Nittany Lions came up just short against No. 9 Virginia and No. 15 Indiana on the final day of their double-dual meet at UVA's Aquatic and Fitness Center on Saturday afternoon.
Penn State (2-2), who entered the meet receiving votes in the latest national poll, placed second in seven events on the final day of the competition. Despite those performances, the Lions fell to the Cavaliers, 187-158, and dropped a 195-158 decision against the Hoosiers.
The 200-medley relay squad kicked off the afternoon action by placing a close second in the first event of the day. Hailey Campbell, Rachel Butler, Mackenzie Powers, and Samantha Palser completed the event in 1:43.21.
Paige Whitmire followed up the relay team's performance with a runner-up showing in the 50-freestyle after cruising to a time of 23.34. Palser also had a strong showing in the event as she followed close behind in fourth place after clocking in at 23.47.
A day after taking the title in the 200-backstroke, Amy Modglin continued to perform well. In the 100-yard discipline, she placed second in 56.03. Hailey Campbell and Becky Yokosh also recorded top-10 times during the event for the Nittany Lions.
Modglin later returned to the pool for another excellent performance as the runner-up in the 400-IM. For the second straight day, she eclipsed an NCAA `B' standard after topping the provisional qualifying time by over a full second in 4:18.39.
Merritt Krawczyk and Alexandra Young continued the squad's strong showing with two more second-place efforts. Krawczyk was the runner-up in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:17.26, while Young was just barely out-touched in the 100-butterfly after clocking in at 55.41.
Fittingly, the Nittany Lions capped off the meet with another second-place showing in the 400-freestyle relay. This time, Palser and Whitmire teamed up with Katie Pulos and Erin Thomas to top an NCAA `B' standard with a time of 3:34.54.
In other events, Diana Greco was Penn State's top finisher in the 1000-freestyle after touching the wall in seventh-place in 10:10.44. Chelsea Weedman also recorded the team's top time in the 200-freestyle after placing eighth in 1:52.82.
Penn State will be back in action in two weeks when the squad travels to Athens, Georgia for the Bulldog Invitational on December 3-5.
