Penn State Women's Tennis Starts Strong at WMU Super Challenge

WMU Super Challenge Results (Day One)

KALAMAZOO, Mich.; November 5, 2010 - The Penn State women's tennis team began play at the WMU Super Challenge in Kalamazoo, Mich., today. The Nittany Lions tallied six doubles wins and three singles victories on the opening day of the tournament.

Sophomore Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) continued her solid play by winning her singles match against Wisconsin's Nicky Stracar (6-3, 6-0). She also won both of her doubles matches with partner Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) as they defeated Indiana's Leslie Hureau and Evgeniya Vertesheva 8-4 in the first round and Western Michigan's Amanda Moccia and April Kerr 8-5 in the second. Perrotta also notched a singles win against Louisville's Sarah Miller (1-6, 7-5, 11-9).

Sophomore Amy Simidian (Carlstadt, N.J.) recorded a singles win as she defeated Wisconsin's Alaina Trgovich (6-2, 6-4). In other singles action, freshman Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) fell to Wisconsin's Aleksandra Markovic (6-3, 6-1). Junior Maria Prishlyak (Kiev, Ukraine) was edged in three sets to Wisconsin's Jenny Hois (4-6, 6-3, 10-8) and fellow junior Kristen Roth (Ardmore, Pa.) was defeated by Indiana's Myriam Sopel (6-3, 6-2).

Roth and Prishlyak went 2-0 in doubles play as they defeated Iowa State's Emma Waites and Reka Kelemen (8-6). In the second round, they beat Western Michigan's Rachel Denny and Ninj Sujashvili (9-8 (5)).

Also in doubles play, Simidian and Bedard came up short against Indiana's Myriam Sopel and Sophie Garre (8-6) in the first round, but bounced back to best Western Michigan's Amanda Moccia and April Kerr (8-5) in the second round. In the doubles first round, freshman Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and sophomore Sarah Henderson (Bloomington, Ind.) defeated Diana Kyllmann and Katya Zapadalova (8-5). Sandor and Henderson dropped a close second round match by Western Michigan's Maria Nivia and Miloslava Shustova (9-7).

Play will continue tomorrow with the second round of singles play and the third round of doubles play.
