UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - The official 2011 WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State t-shirts are now available at all Penn State Bookstore locations and online at www.GoPSUsports.com/store. This year, the Penn State Bookstore will sell youth shirts, in addition to the traditional adult shirt. Five dollars of every adult shirt sold and $2 of every youth shirt sold will be donated to the Pink Zone fundraising efforts.
Students in professor Lanny Sommese's graphic design practical communications class in the Penn State graphic design program developed several t-shirt designs and members of the Lady Lions and Pink Zone committee selected the winning designs. The adult design features a basketball with an integrated ribbon and was designed by fifth-year senior Marshall Ryan Bower of State College, Pa. The youth shirt includes a representation of a basketball player in uniform and was created by senior Andrea Napchan of Plainview, N.Y.
"I have to thank the Penn State Bookstore again for their support of Pink Zone," head coach Coquese Washington said. "To have professor Sommese and his class involved in the t-shirt design process has been a fantastic way to get the Penn State student body involved in this tremendous cause. Marshall and Andrea both created wonderful designs that will bring attention to our day that honors and supports breast cancer survivors."
"When I was developing my concept for the Pink Zone t-shirt, I knew I wanted to work with the fluid motions of both the forms of the basketball and the ribbon itself," Bower said. "I played with several different options while I was still sketching out the logo by hand before finalizing it on the computer."
"I set out to create a t-shirt that celebrated what Pink Zone was all about," Napchan said. "My shirt literally makes everyone part of the team that is standing up to fight cancer."
The 2011 WBCA Pink Zone at Penn State will take place on Sunday, Feb. 27 at noon as the Lady Lions take on Northwestern in the Bryce Jordan Center. The game can be seen on the Big Ten Network. This year's fundraising efforts will benefit the Mount Nittany Medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital. For more information on the Pink Zone at Penn State, visit the official Pink Zone website at www.gopsusports.com/pinkzone.
