Goldstein and Glon Compete Overseas

Jan. 12, 2011

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; January 12, 2011 - The Penn State men's and women's fencing teams were represented this past weekend Jan 8-9, at the 2011 Junior World Cup. Freshmen Jeremy Goldstein and Nicole Glon made the trip to Lignano Sabblador, Italy to compete amongst some of the world's most elite fencers.

Jeremy Goldstein did well in the preliminary round of the men's foil competition but fell short in his first bout of direct elimination. In the women's saber Nicole Glon struggled and her low score in the preliminary round pitted her against a dominant opponent in the first round of direct elimination, whom she was unable to overcome.

Despite neither being able to rank within the top 32, Coach Emmanuil Kaidanov said, the possibility to earn a spot on the US team for the Junior World Championship is still open.

While Goldstein and Glon both struggled overseas, they have given dominant performances in many of this seasons preceding events here in the United States. The freshmen have continued to strengthen their skills as the season progresses and proven themselves to be valuable assets to the two-time defending NCAA Champion Nittany Lions.
