UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State men's swimming & diving travels to the University of Minnesota to compete in the Big Ten Championships starting Wednesday night. The Nittany Lions will look to improve upon their 7th-place finish from a year ago.

Leading Penn State individually has been Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.) with strong performances in freestyle events as well as all the relays. Currently, Alden is seeded 4th in the 100 free, 7th in the 200 free and 8th in the 50 free. The junior will almost undoubtedly take part in as many relays as possible with PSU's strongest team coming in the 200 medley relay, which has the 3rd-fastest time in the Big Ten this season at 1:28.99.

Other top seeds heading into the Championships include Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa.), Matt Salig (Downingtown, Pa.) and Scott Marino (Scotch Plains, N.J.). Scherer is 7th in 200 breast and 9th in 100 breast, while Salig is 7th in the 200 butterfly and Marino is 7th in the 200 IM.

If the Nittany Lions can exceed their 7th-place finishes from 2009 and 2010 it would be the best showing since a 5th-place finish at the 2003 Big Ten Championships. Penn State's best finish came in 1999 when the Nittany Lions captured their only Big Ten title.
