MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Penn State swimming & diving team saw two more program records fall on Thursday night as PSU sits in 6th place at the Big Ten Championships.
In the final event of the night session, Penn State posted a 5th-place showing in the 400 medley relay with a school-record time of 3:10.58, which was good for an NCAA "B" cut time. Graham Risley led off with a 48.03 backstroke leg before Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa.) went 53.09 in the breast and Sean Grier (Hummelstown, Pa.) swam 46.32 during the fly leg. Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.) anchored the relay with a 43.14 showing in the free. The previous school record was 3:12.97 set in 2007.
The Nittany Lions sent four individual swimmers to the finals of the 200 IM with Scott Marino (Scotch Plains, N.J.) leading the way with his 4th-place, school-record 1:44.62 performance. In the B Final, Risley notched 16th-place points with a time of 1:48.08.
Prior to the 400 medley relay, Alden took part in the 50 free B Final, finishing 14th with a time of 20.14. Alden swam 20.03 earlier in the preliminary session for Penn State.
In the 1-meter springboard diving preliminaries, which took place in the afternoon break, freshman Jordan Harris (Philipsburg, Pa.) finished 23rd with a score of 253.70, while Alex Marchinski (Shillington, Pa.) was 26th (227.60).
Michigan tops the field with 259.5 points followed by Indiana (251), Ohio State (183), Minnesota (159.5) and Purdue (125.5). Penn State has 102 points leading 7th-place Wisconsin (94), Iowa (87.5), Northwestern (86) and Michigan State (76)
The Nittany Lions will return to competition tomorrow morning when the preliminary heats for the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free and 100 breast begin at Noon ET. The 3-meter diving competition will start around 2:00 p.m. and the finals for swimming and diving begin at 7:30 p.m. ET
