UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's swimming & diving team won for the sixth successive time against Buffalo in a 129-110 dual meet victory on Friday afternoon at McCoy Natatorium. The Nittany Lions remain perfect against the Bulls by taking nine of 13 events.
In swimming events, Penn State (5-6) held an 11-event winning streak over UB (5-2) dating back to last season's triumph. The Lions continued that winning trend by capturing the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:21.28 led by a team of Graham Risley (Riverside, Ill.), Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa.), Matt Salig (Downingtown, Pa.) and Shane Austin (Kennett Square, Pa.).
John Silvers (Sarasota, Fla.) made it 13-in-a-row for Penn State with a 9:36.94 swim in the 1,000 free. Unfortunately for Penn State, the streak came to an end when Buffalo's Jaren Heine edge out PSU's Scott Marino (Scotch Plains, N.J.) in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.12, just .12 faster than Marino.
The Nittany Lions got back to their winning ways when Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.) convincingly won the 50 free with a time of 20.55. Luke Bushman (Green Bay, Wis.) won the 200 IM with a 1:53.34 swim then backed that up with a nearly three-second 1:50.60 200 fly win.
In between the two Bushman victories was a second-place effort in the 1-meter dive by Jordan Harris (Philipsburg, Pa.) who scored 299.48, falling by just 3.88 to UB's Colin Patrican. Harris notched a career best 333.90 in the 3-meter minutes later, but was third to Kenny Rhoades (354.45) and Patrician (337.20) who went 1-2 in the event.
Alden returned to the pool to notch a victory in the 100 free, swimming 45.12. Jeff Gomez (Morristown, N.J.) took second in the 200 back in a time of 1:50.89 before Salig posted a 4:36.57 500 free triumph.
Scherer was victorious in the 200 breaststroke to seal the dual meet win, sweeping away the field by 10 seconds in a time of 2:03.39. Alden, Andrew Sideras (Philadelphia, Pa.), Shane and John Austin (Kennett Square, Pa.) combined to win the 200 free relay in a time of 1:22.93 to round out the event.
