COLUMBUS, Oh.; March 26, 2011 - It was the women's turn today at the NCAA Fencing Championships and with only one day left in the competition the Nittany Lions remain in second. After day one, for the women, senior Doris Willette is in first while Penn State remains behind Notre Dame in the overall team standings.
Team captain Willette holds the first place spot in the women's foil finishing the day with 12 victories. Willette is hoping to reclaim the National Title she won in 2009. The senior scored 65 touches and received 29. Teammate Olga Ostatnigrosh finished the day in 18th.
Defending National Champion Margherita Guzzi-Vincenti ended the day in fourth with 11 victories. The sophomore had 61 touches scored and 41 received. Alyssa Vongries took eighth for the day with 8 victories.
Nine victories gave junior Monika Aksamit an eighth place finish in the women's saber. Fellow Nittany Lion Nicole Glon took 20th with four victories.
Coach Emmanuil Kaidanov is anticipating a tough day tomorrow with, "the volume of each bout getting harder and harder." The Nittany Lions are looking to push past Notre Dame who leads the pack with 139 points. Penn State is close behind with 133 and St. John's rounds out the top three with 123.
