COLUMBUS, Ohio --Penn State men's swimming sent two of its own to the the Last Chance Meet at Ohio State on Sunday to better improve their seeding positions and possible qualifications for the NCAA Championships.
Matt Salig (Downingtown, Pa.) went on to win his final of the 200 fly with a personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:45.07. The freshman swam a 1:45.67 in the prelims. Salig is hovering around the Top 20 in the nation and is hoping for an at-large invitation to the NCAA Championships. Selections are released this week.
Fellow classmate Thomas Mershon (Malvern, Pa.) took part in the 200 back. Mershon swam 1:45.25 in the event, a career-best and NCAA B cut time, in the preliminaries. Mershon swam 1:46.04 in the finals to wrap up the event.
Penn State will await the NCAA selections this week as several Nittany Lions made NCAA times. Both medley relays rank in the top 15 in the nation as the 200 is ninth and the 400 is 12th.
Other top PSU swimmers include Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa.) in the 100 breast (3rd) and 200 breast (25th). Scott Marino (Scotch Plains, N.J.) is 11th in both the 200 and 400 IM events.
