UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Picking up some steam going into the Penn Relays this weekend, sophomore Casimir Loxsom (New Haven, Conn.) has been named Big Ten Athlete of the Week. Loxsom posted one of the nation's top 800-meter times in the country at last weekend's Jesse Owens Classic.
Loxsom clocked a lifetime-best and conference-leading performance to win the 800, last Sunday at Ohio State University. Loxsom blitzed to the personal-best and Jesse Owens Stadium record 1:46.45, to better the rest of the men's 800 field by nearly two seconds. The sophomore, who was the Big Ten Champion in the event a year ago, now leads the conference in the half mile, and moves to third in Division I with the effort.
Loxsom's PR, which stands second in Penn State history, currently ranks ninth in the world according to the IAAF. Loxsom, who placed second in his signature event at the IAAF World Junior Championships last summer, also ran on the Nittany Lions' fifth-place 4x400 on the men's side, which crossed in 3:10.08.
The sophomore and the rest of the Nittany Lion contingent will travel to the prestigious Penn Relays this weekend, set for Thursday-Saturday, April 28-30.
