Women's Golf Team Improves in Second Round of Cougar Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Penn State women's golf team posted a 16-over-par 304 in today's second round at the Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston. The Nittany Lions shaved four strokes off of their first-round score of 308, leaving them in 18th place with a two-round score of 612, 36-over-par, with one round to play.

Junior Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio), who helped the Nittany Lions stay 11 strokes ahead of Big Ten foe Wisconsin (623), had the best day for the squad carding a 1-over-par 73. This helped her jump 23 spots from yesterday to a tie for 47th place with a 6-over-par 150 through the first two days. Ransone birdied the par-4 11th hole.

Sophomore Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) also improved, notching a 75 in the second round, leaving her with an 8-over-par 152 and a tie for 63rd place, seven spots better than the previous day. Sophomore Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) matched her first-round score and has total of 154 (77-77) strokes and a tie for 74th place through the first two days.

Freshmen Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.) and Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.) rounded out the starters for the Nittany Lions. Elliott holds a score of 156 (77-79), which ties her for 85th place with a 12-over-par. Archambault is currently tied for 99th place with a 160 (77-83). Junior Jamie Lavin (Deerfield, Ill.) has a score of 164 (80-84) as an individual.

North Carolina took over the team lead with a 6-under-par 282 as a team in the second round. Its total score of 567 for the tournament is 9-under-par and one stroke ahead of Florida's 568.

Erica Popson of Tennessee leads all golfers in the individual category with a 9-under-par 135 (66-69), one stroke ahead of LSU's Austin Ernst.

The third and final round of play will begin tomorrow, Sept. 13, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start at the Yeaman's Golf Club. Live scoring is available at www.Golfstat.com.
