CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team continued play at the UVa Fall Classic Saturday, tallying double-digit singles victories in day two. Three singles participants advanced to the quarterfinals in their flights. Action will continue tomorrow with singles play from the Snyder Tennis Center.
In the "Blue" singles draw, sophomore Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) began slowly, dropping a first round pairing with VCU's Filip Svensson, 6-2, 6-3. Bader righted the ship upon entering the consolation bracket though, defeating Duwane Thomas of Morgan State (6-0, 6-0), and setting up a duel against Old Dominion's Alfredo Rodriguez Sunday afternoon.
Junior Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) jumped out to a quick start in the "Orange" bracket. The Texan quickly dismissed Virginia Tech's Zach Pine (6-2, 6-3) in the first round. He then faced a stiff challenge from Leo Lapennti of George Washington. Welnetz fell in the first set, 6-4, before going on to take the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals Sunday.
In "White" singles action, freshman Tomas Hanzlik (Prague, Czech Republic) began slowly, dropping his first set to William & Mary's Jaime Whiteford, 6-1. The freshman, in his fifth collegiate match, rallied impressively to take the next two sets, 6-0 and 6-3. In second round action, Hanzlik took down ODU's Chris Muzalewski 6-4, 6-1. He will face Sergio Myss in the quarterfinals Sunday.
Senior Taylor Cohen (Philadelphia, Pa.) advanced to the "Black" singles quarterfinals after taking down Greg Vladimirsky of James Madison (7-6, 3-6, 7-6) and Virginia's Dino Dell'Orto, 5-7, 7-6, 6-3. Sophomore Chris Young (Melbourne, Australia) defeated Eastern Kentucky's Nick Schroeder (6-3, 6-1) in his opening round bout. The Aussie then fell to Philippe Oudshoorn of Virginia, 6-3, 7-6. He will face JMU's Ryan Pool in the fifth place bracket Sunday.
In the "Gold" singles bracket, juniors Guanhua Chen (DaLian, China) and C.J. Griffin (Portland, Mich.) both fell in each of their two matches. Finally, "Red" singles senior Jason Lee (Sydney, Australia) took down his first round opponent, Albert Ochagavia of Old Dominion, 6-2, 7-5. He then fell to William & Mary's Ben Guthrie, 4-6, 6-0, 1-6. Senior Christopher Hasyn (Lansdale, Pa.) also started out with a victory, defeating Virginia's Steven Rooda, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 before falling to Liberty's Tristan Stayt, 4-6, 4-6. Both will compete in the fifth place draw Sunday.
Following the completion of the UVa Fall Classic, Penn State will return home before heading to Charlottesville, Va. to compete in the ITA Regional Championships, Oct. 20-23.
