CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team earned three victories in day two of the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships Saturday. Junior Bryan Welnetz (Laredo, Texas) and senior Jason Lee (Sydney, Australia) highlighted the action by advancing to the round of 32.
After a first round bye granted Welnetz an automatic spot in the round of 64, he took on Virginia Tech's Trpimir Kujundzic in his first match of the tournament. The Texan spared no time in taking the first set, 6-4. Kujundzic managed to push the second set to a tie-breaker before Welnetz put the match away in the breaker, 7-4. Welnetz then fell to Old Dominion's Albert Ochagavia in the third round, 2-6, 2-6.
Lee also advanced to the third round, defeating UMBC's Daniel Gray, 6-3, 6-0. He then fell to Filip Svensson of VCU in a hard-fought battle. Lee forced a tie-breaker in the first set, before falling 7-6 (2). He then fell 6-2 in the second set.
Freshman Tomas Hanzlik (Prague, Czech Republic) fell to Virginia Tech's Lucas Oliveira, 6-3, 6-4, following an open round victory. Sophomore Russell Bader (Austin, Texas) fell to the fifth overall seed, Julen Uriguen, of Virginia in a fierce bout. Bader took the first set 6-4. Uriguen then went on a run, taking the second set, 6-2 and the deciding, third set, 7-5.
Finally, in consolation bracket play, sophomore Chris Young (Melbourne, Australia) took down Joe Pine of Virginia Tech, 6-4, 6-4.
Following the completion of the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, the Nittany Lions will head to Iowa City, Iowa to compete in the Big Ten Singles Championships, Oct. 28-31.
