ATLANTA, Ala. - The Penn State men's swimming & diving team used the strength of 12 event wins en route to a dominating 177-122 victory at Georgia Tech on Saturday morning. Freshman Nate Savoy (Reading, Pa.) was outstanding, winning three individual races and helping the 200 medley relay to victory.
Penn State (2-1) bounced back in fine form after a tough meet on Friday at perennial championship contender Auburn by winning 12 events on Saturday against the Yellow Jackets. Savoy led the 200 medley relay with the backstroke before giving way to Mitch Scherer (Pottstown, Pa.), Sean Grier (Hummelstown, Pa.) and Andrew Sideras (Philadelphia, Pa.) in a time of 1:31.33.
Savoy went on to win three more times in the 200 butterfly (1:50.05), 200 IM (1:53.95) and 100 backstroke (50.54). Savoy was closely followed by second-place teammate Jeff Gomez (Morristown, N.J.) in the 100 back with a time of 51.75 and in the 200 back with a time of 1:52.34.
Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.) was a multiple event winner on Saturday as well by capturing the 200 freestyle (1:41.92) and 100 freestyle (45.55). Joining Alden and Savoy in the multi-win ranks was freshman Nick Ankosko (East Brunswick, N.J.) who won the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events with time of 9:35.57 and 4:38.26, respectively. Grier won the 100 fly in a time of 50.24 in addition to helping the 200 medley relay's victory.
Other top performing wins included Scherer's 57.28 in the 100 breaststroke, Matt Salig's (Downingtown, Pa.) 1:50.05 in the 200 fly and Chris Cipolla's (South River, N.J.) 2:05.11 in the 200 breaststroke. Scherer was just .15 behind Cipolla with a time of 2:05.26.
Penn State returns to Pennsylvania where it will host Big Ten rival Indiana and regional rival Virginia for a Nov. 18-19 class at McCoy Natatorium.
