Kalamazoo, Mich. - The Penn State women's tennis team continued competition in the Western Michigan Super Challenge today. The Nittany Lions competed in the second round of singles play and third round of doubles action. Penn State earned two doubles wins and three singles victories in the second day of the round robin style tournament.
Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Marie-Frederique Bedard teamed up to narrowly defeat Sarah Miller and Mandy Brown of Louisville, 8-6.
Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and Chelsea Utting(Peachtree City, Ga.) also faced a duo from Louisville. The pair pushed Amelia Harris and Rebecca Shine into a tiebreaker, coming out victorious, 9-8 (3).
Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) and Nina Sertic(Zagrab, Croatia) also went into a tiebreaker against players from Louisville, however eventually lost to Manuela Velasquez and Julia Fellerhoff, 9-8 (1).
In the last doubles match of the day, Sarah Henderson (Bloomington, Ind.) and Kristen Roth(Ardmore, Pa.) were bested by Iowa State's Marie-Christine Chartier and Meghan Cassens.
In singles action, six Nittany Lions faced players from DePaul, while Roth was the lone Penn State athlete to face an athlete from Western Michigan. The senior lost to Caroline Aleck, 6-4, 6-0.
In the matches against players from DePaul, Januskova easily defeated Gia McKnight, 6-1, 6-1. Perrotta also pulled out any easy victory against Kelsey Lawson, 6-2, 6-3. Bedard also came out victorious, beating Cali Gustafson, 3-6, 6-2 (7).
Utting come out on the wrong side of a close match, losing to Patricia Fargas, 6-4, 7-5. Sertic fell to Rebeca Mitrea, 6-7 (6), 6-3 (3) and Sandor was upended by Carolin Neumann, 6-7 (1), 6-1 (8).
The Nittany Lions will wrap up round robin competition in the WMU Super Challenge tomorrow to finish their fall tournament schedule.
