UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's soccer super sophomore Maya Hayes (West Orange, N.J.) gathered another All-America honor on Thursday as Soccer America tabbed her on its MVP list for the 2011 season. Hayes is one of 11 Soccer America MVP First-Team members.
The striker was named a Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Finalist this past Friday afternoon while garnering NSCAA All-America First Team honors. Hayes is the first Penn Stater to earn recognition on both the NSCAA and Soccer America All-America First Teams since Alyssa Naeher in 2008.
Hayes represent the 12th time a Nittany Lion has been on the Soccer America MVP First Team and is the first sophomore to be on the list since Tiffany Weimer in 2004, who went on to back that up with another spot on the 2005 squad. The other Penn State student-athletes to earn first-team distinction were Christie Welsh (1999-2001), Joanna Lohman (2002-03), Erin McLeod (2004-05), and Ali Krieger (2006).
The sensational forward scored 31 times with eight assists and 70 points, breaking the Penn State and Big Ten record for points in a single season, while also breaking every PSU sophomore offensive record in the process. Hayes, who led the nation in total goals and points in the season, also earned NSCAA All-Great Lakes First Team, Big Ten Forward of the Year and All-Big Ten First Team laurels throughout the course of the season.
