UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State women's soccer standout Maya Hayes (West Orange, N.J.) was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday night. Hayes is Penn State's first honoree since 2008.
Hayes had a breakout year for the Nittany Lions (21-5-0) in helping Penn State reach its first Sweet 16 berth since 2007. The sophomore striker scored 31 times and posted 70 points, setting a new Penn State and Big Ten Conference record for points in a season en route to Big Ten Forward of the Year and CoSIDA Academic All-District II First Team laurels. Hayes is a kinesiology major with a 3.35 cumulative GPA.
Thursday marked the first time since Zoe Bouchelle's inclusion on the 2008 Academic All-America Third Team that a Penn Stater earned a coveted spot. Hayes became the fifth Nittany Lion to earn Third Team recognition, while being the 13th Penn State student-athlete in program history to be named to any team.
Hayes and the rest of the Nittany Lions await the NSCAA All-Region and All-America honors, which are set to be released next week.
