UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The 13th-ranked Penn State women's gymnastics team opens the 2012 season in a tri-meet at West Virginia with Maryland. Action is set for 2 p.m. in Morgantown at the WVU Coliseum on Sunday, Jan. 8. Live scoring will be available via a link at GoPSUsports.com.
The Series: Penn State vs. West Virginia
The Nittany Lions lead the series with the Mountaineers 31-5 dating back to 1979. The squads met twice in 2011 with Penn State winning both meetings. On Feb. 6 in a tri-meet at Rec Hall, Penn State won the meet with a team score of 195.550, while West Virginia finished third with a 194.050. Penn State traveled to WVU on March 12 for a dual meet winning, 195.825-195.025.
The Series: Penn State vs. Maryland
Penn State owns a 13-1 record against the Terps dating back to 1987. In 2011, Penn State traveled to Maryland on Feb. 18 for a quad meet. The Nittany Lions took first place with a 196.600, while Maryland placed second with a 195.300. The squads met again when Penn State hosted Maryland and N.C. State in a tri-meet on March 4 at Rec Hall. Penn State won the meet with a 197.075 and Maryland took third place with a 194.625.
What's Next?
The women's gymnastics team remains on the road for a trip to New Hampshire on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. The Nittany Lions return home for their home opener on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. Penn State hosts Michigan State, Cornell and No. 2 Alabama.
