Penn State Sits in 15th at Lady Puerto Rico Classic

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - The Penn State women's golf team opened its spring season at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, hosted by Purdue, and finished the first round of play in 15th place. The Nittany Lions posted a 33-over-par 321 on the par-72, 6,191-yard River Course at the Rio Mar Beach Resort.

Junior Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio) was the top Nittany Lion starter after she carded a 6-over-par 78. Her score left her in a tie for 44th place following the first round of play. Sophomore Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) finished one stroke behind Ransone with a 79 and a tie for 54th.

Freshman Erin Michel (Mason, Ohio) tallied an 81, leaving her in a tie for 67th place. Classmates Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.) and Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.) rounded out the starters. Elliott totaled an 11-over-par, while Archambault was 21-over-par in the first round.

Catherine Herrera (Houston, Texas) competed as an individual and led the Nittany Lions as she carded a career-best round of 76. She finished the day in a tie for 32nd place.

LSU and Georgia topped the field, each finishing with an opening-round score of 6-over-par for a 294. Georgia's Emilie Burger led all individuals with a 6-under-par 66.

The second round of play will begin on Monday (Feb. 13) with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Atlantic Standard Time.
