UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.; Februrary, 17, 2012 - The No. 59 Penn State Nittany Lions (5-2, 1-0) defeated the Pennsylvania Quakers (3-2, 0-0) with a resounding 7-0 victory on Friday night at the Sarni Tennis Center.
The win marked the fifth straight for the Nittany Lions, who are ranked for the first time since Feb. 22, 2008. Penn State was coming off consecutive wins against ranked opponents Ohio State and VCU.
Penn State started the match off strong with a commanding 8-3 victory by the duo of Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) and Chelsea Utting (Peachtree City, Ga.) over Pennsylvania's Stephanie Do and Alex Ion. With the lead in doubles, Marie Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) handily defeated Pennsylvania's Jules Rodin and Srinidhi Raghavan, 8-1, to clinch the doubles point.
In the final doubles match Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and Sarah Henderson (Bloomington, Ind.) battled through extra sets as they defeated Daniela DePaoli and Emma Whitfield, 8-7 (1) for the doubles sweep.
In first singles, No. 43 Januskova proved her recently acquired ranking by defeating Penn's Do in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. The junior is now 7-0 in singles play including wins over two ranked opponents. Sandor continued the trend as she quickly defeated DePaoli, 6-3, 6-2, to push the Nittany Lion lead to 3-0. In fourth singles, Perrotta bested Raghavan, 6-4, 6-2, clinching the fifth straight win for the No. 59 Nittany Lions.
With the win in hand, Utting fought in a back-and-forth battle with Ion in second singles as she won the match, 6-4, 6-3. In fifth singles, Bedard powered her way past Penn's Rodin, 6-2, 6-2 behind several hard-hitting forehands.
Kristen Roth held off Whitfield after a tough second set to win the tiebreaker and give the Nittany Lions a clean sweep with her victory in sixth singles, 6-3, 2-6, 10-4.
The Nittany Lions will look to improve on their win streak on Sunday, Feb. 19 when they take on the Tulane Green Wave at the Sarni Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
