Penn State went on to extend the lead in the fifth when Collett's single to left-centerfield score pinch-runner Meghan Bradley (Santa Monica, Calif.), as Bradley scored her first collegiate run.

From there James Madison was forced to try and come back, getting one run back in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run by Ashley Burnham off Marissa Diescher (Livingston Manor, N.Y.). Diescher pitched her way out of several jams, working around six hits and six walks, while giving up four runs. In the fifth, Lisa Akamine (Escondido, Calif.) later came in with two walks and got a strikeout of Megan Shinaberry with two on base and the tying run at second base. Diescher returned to throw the sixth and seventh innings, earning her first collegiate win and improve to 1-2 on the season.
