Women's Golf Jumps to Second Place at Rio Verde Invitational

RIO VERDE, Ariz. -

The Penn State women's golf team jumped three spots to move into second place after the second round of the Rio Verde Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan, on Saturday. The team has posted a 36-over-par two-round score of 604 (310-294) on the par-71, 6,260-yard Quail Run Golf Course.

The Nittany Lions led the tournament at times and carded a 10-over-par 294 in the second round, the lowest round of any team in the first two days of the tournament. The score of 294 also tied a season-best round for the Nittany Lions, which came at the Nittany Lion Invitational on Oct. 1, 2011, and is tied for the third-lowest 18-hole score in team history.

Freshman Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.) and junior Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio) cracked the top 10 in the second round. Elliott, who birdied the seventh, 15th and 17th holes, paced Penn State with a career-best 1-under-par score of 70. Through two rounds, Elliott's score of 70 is a tournament-best and the best round of any Nittany Lion this season. She ended the day tied for second place with a 5-over-par two-round total of 147.

Ransone registered a team-best five birdies in the second round and tied a career-best with an even-par score of 71. Ransone has totaled a 7-over-par two-round score of 149 and finished the day in seventh place. Sophomore Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) is tied for 15th place after shaving one stroke off of her first-round score and finished the second day with an 11-over-par 153 (77-76). Vosters recorded a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole.

Freshman Erin Michel (Mason, Ohio) birdied the par-4 12th hole and finished the second round tied for 28th place with matching rounds of 78 for a 14-over-par 156. Classmate Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.), who recorded birdies on the fifth and 18th holes, rounded out the Nittany Lion starters as she is tied for 67th place with a 23-over-par two-round total of 165 (88-77).

Akron is in first place out of the 16 teams competing. It holds a one-stroke lead on Penn State with a 35-over-par 603 (305-298). Kelsey Welber of Missouri State is just one stroke ahead of Elliott with a two-round total of 146 (75-71).

The final round of play will begin with a 10 a.m. ET shotgun start on Sunday (March 11).
