Penn State Ties for Fifth at Pinehurst Challenge

PINEHURST, N.C. - Penn State carded its second sub-300 round of the Pinehurst Challenge, hosted by the College of Charleston, with a 299 in the closing 18 holes to tie for fifth place on Tuesday (March 20). The Nittany Lions totaled a 28-over-par 892 (305-288-299), good for the third-best three-round total in school history, on the par-72, 5,993-yard Course No. 6 at the Pinehurst Resort.

The Nittany Lions finished four strokes behind the all-time team record three-round score of 888, which was recorded twice with the last coming at the Nittany Lion Invitational on Oct. 3, 1999. The third-round score of 299 marked the fifth time this season the team notched a score under 300.

Sophomore Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) led the Nittany Lions with a tie for 14th place and concluded the tournament with a 5-over-par score of 221 (76-72-73). Junior Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio) finished one stroke behind Vosters in 16th place with rounds of 79, 68 and 75.

Freshman Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.) notched a three-round score of 224 (76-71-77) and tied for 22nd place. Junior Jamie Lavin (Deerfield, Ill.) registered a 14-over-par 230 (74-78-78) and finished in a tie for 48th place. Freshman Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.) fired a 74 in the final 18 holes, marking her best round of the tournament. She finished in a tie for 54th place with a 232 (81-77-74).

North Carolina State held onto the team lead and carded a 1-over-par 865 (286-285-294) through three rounds. The Wolfpack also had the individual winner as Brittany Marchand tallied a 5-under-par 211 (73-70-68).

Penn State will continue at the Lady Buckeye, hosted by Ohio State, in Columbus, Ohio. The two-day tournament is scheduled to begin on April 21.
