UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State baseball (5-16, 1-2) dropped its series finale to the Indiana Hoosiers on Sunday by a score of 2-1. The Nittany Lions had just five hits and left a total of eight runners on base.
Junior Steven Hill (Colleyville, Texas) got the start for Penn State and went 6.1 innings deep of two run ball. Hill stuck out four batters, allowed four hits and walked just one. Juniors Luis Montesinos (Miami, Fla.) and Elliot Searer (Lewistown, Pa.) each had two hits for the Nittany Lions.
A total of just four hits between the two squads were accumulated in the first five innings. Then in the sixth inning, Indiana was the first team to get on the board. With two outs and nobody on base, the Hoosiers' Sam Travis started things with a double to left field, followed by Michael Basil being hit by a pitch. Chris Sujka then doubled to right field, scoring Basil and Travis. That would be the only two runs Indiana would score on the day.
In the bottom half, Penn State attempted a rally. The bases would become loaded with two outs for Montesinos. The junior bounced a ball just over the pitcher's reach and made it to first safely to earn an RBI. Penn State trailed 2-1 at that point. The Lions would end up leaving the bases loaded to end that inning.
Freshman Casey Kulina (Hummelstown, Pa.) came in and pitched a strong 2.2 innings, giving up no hits and striking out two. Despite the strong combined pitching effort of Hill and Kulina, Penn State would be unable to capitalize. The Lions had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but a ground ball double play would end any hope of a rally.
Penn State returns to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park next weekend as it hosts Coppin State in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
