UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Junior Sharaya Musser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) has been named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week for the fifth time this season and the 10th time in her career. Musser shares this week's honor with Ohio State's Sarah Miller.
She has now tied the Big Ten record for weekly awards in a season. This is the fourth time in league history a gymnast has earned five Gymnast of the Week awards. Musser joins Michigan's Kylee Botterman (2011), former Nittany Lion Brandi Personett and Iowa's Alexis Maday (2004) in the Big Ten record books.
Musser was integral in Penn State's come-from-behind win against No. 23 Michigan and North Carolina on March 2. She earned three individual event titles after tying her season high on vault with a 9.950, posting a 9.900 on beam and a season-best 9.925 on floor. She also finished third on bars with a 9.875. Musser scored a season-high 39.650 in the all-around to take the crown for the eighth time in 2012.
Penn State is back in action this weekend at Pittsburgh on March 11 at 6 p.m. The Nittany Lions return home on March 17 to host Maryland in their final home meet of the season at 7 p.m. in Rec Hall.
