TAMPA, Fla. - The Nittany Lion softball team (6-8) will look to continue its successful Spring Break trip on Wednesday at Clearwater's Eddie C. Moore Complex against Miami (Ohio) at 1:00 p.m. The mid-week clash at Moore Field No. 3 serves as a tune up for the two teams heading into this weekend's USF Under Armour Showcase. Wednesday, 1 p.m. vs. Miami (Ohio): | Field 3
Penn State, winners in four of the last five games, takes on a strong Miami (10-4) team that has won three of its last four collegiate games. The RedHawks most recently downed USF, ranked No. 25 by USA Softball, 2-1, in eight innings on Sunday. Miami plays the Netherlands national team on Tuesday.
The Nittany Lions had an upset of its own on Sunday, beating No. 19 Auburn, 2-1, in nine innings in the Citrus Classic hosted by the ESPN Wide World of Sports. That victory was the fourth-straight for Penn State after wins over LIU Brooklyn, N.C. State and Lipscomb. The streak was snapped late Sunday afternoon by surging Illinois State, 1-0.
Penn State is 2-2 all-time against the RedHawks, defeating Miami in last year's Buzz Classic, 1-0, on a Kasie Hatfield (Tampa, Fla.) home run. Lisa Akamine (Escondido, Calif.) picked up the shutout against former Penn State assistant coach, Kelly Kovach Schoenly. The MU skipper has a 157-136-1 record after serving on Robin Petrini's staff for eight years (1998-2006) with seven 30-win seasons.
Following the Miami (Ohio) match-up, Penn State visits South Florida for games against the Bulls and Virginia Tech Hokies on Friday.
