PARK RIDGE, Ill. - Penn State baseball's Jordan Steranka (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has been named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Steranka picks up a weekly award from the conference for the first time in his career. The last Penn State athlete to be named Player of the Week was Steve Snyder (West Chester, Pa.) back on May 3, 2010.
Steranka is coming off arguably a career week, as he sported a .571 batting average in four games (eight hits in 14 at bats). He hit three homers and drove in eight runs with an OPS (on base plus slugging) of 2.029. He tied his career-high for home runs on Saturday with two against Michigan. Steranka drove five runs in that game as well, leading Penn State to a 14-1 victory.
Steranka gave the Nittany Lions an insurance run with a solo homer in the eighth inning against Michigan on Sunday to give PSU a 6-4 lead. In addition, he moved into second place in program history in at-bats (790), a tie for fourth in RBI (153) and fourth in triples (11). The senior first baseman is just 31 hits shy of tying the school record for career hits. Penn State took two of three games from the Wolverines this past weekend.
Penn State hosts Bucknell on Greek Night this Wednesday at 6:05 p.m. Fans in attendance will receive a Penn State whiffle ball and bat while supplies last. The Nittany Lions will then hit the road for Iowa this weekend as they look to creep up in the Big Ten Standings. Individual game tickets for Adult General Admission start at just $4 and just $2 for youth. Student tickets cost $2 as well.
