Final Stats

University Park, Pa. - The No. 50 Penn State women's tennis team (11-10, 3-7) could not upset the No. 14 Michigan Wolverines (16-6, 9-1) on Friday afternoon, as it fell, 5-2, on a beautiful day to kick-off Blue White Weekend. The match was the last home event for the season that honored the three seniors on Penn State's roster: Nina Sertic (Zagrab, Croatia), Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Kristen Roth (Ardmore, Pa.).

To start the match off, Michigan came out strong in doubles action, sweeping the Nittany Lions in all three matches. The duo of Emina Bektas and Brooke Bolender showed why they are the eighth ranked pairing in the country, defeating Chelsea Utting (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Perrotta in the No. 1 match, 8-1.

Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) and Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) took on Mimi Nguyen and Michelle Sulahian in the No. 2 position. In their first time playing doubles together all season, the Nittany Lion duo could not pull out the win, as they fell, 8-2.

In the No. 3 match, Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and Sertic faced Sam Critser and Sarah Lee in a back-and-forth match. Unfortunately, the Nittany Lion pair could not pull out the victory, as they lost a close one, 8-6.

Thanks to their stellar performance in doubles play, the Wolverines took a 1-0 lead heading into singles action. Michigan used their doubles momentum, as it stormed to two straight singles points to take a 3-0 lead over the Nittany Lions. On court two, No. 73 Bolender defeated Perrotta in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, and in the number six match, Dodge bested Bedard, 6-1, 6-2.

On court five, Sertic picked up a victory for the Nittany Lions, upending Critser, 6-2, 6-4, to put Penn State on the board, 3-1. However, Sandor fell to No. 108 Nguyen in the No. 4 slot, 6-4, 6-0. With that victory for the Wolverines, Michigan clinched the victory with two matches still in progress.

In the No. 1 bout, No. 76 Januskova was in a dual with No. 13 Bektas. After a tight first set, the junior eventually fell 5-7, but Januskova stormed back to take the second, 6-4. In a back-and-forth tiebreaker, Januskova was ultimately bested, 7-10.

In the last match of the day, Utting showed excellence, as she defeated Lee, 7-6, 3-6, 10-7, to give Penn State it's second point of the day.

Next up, the Nittany Lions wrap up regular season play when they head to East Lansing to take on Michigan State at 11 a.m. on Sunday, April 22. After that, Penn State will travel to the Big Ten Championships starting on Thurs., April 26 in Columbus, Ohio.
