Lions Drop Finale to Iowa, 4-2

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Penn State closed out the weekend with a 4-2 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes on Sunday afternoon. The loss snaps Penn State's five-game winning streak. Penn State finishes the weekend taking two of three from the Hawkeyes.

Senior Jordan Steranka (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had a three-hit game for the Nittany Lions, including a homerun in the second inning. Sophomore Steve Snyder (West Chester, Pa.) picked up two hits to wrap up a successful weekend for him. Junior John Walter (Haddonfield, N.J.) pitched five innings and struck out four in the start. The Nittany Lions outhit the Hawkeyes, 8-5.

After a scoreless first inning for the Lions, Iowa put up a three spot in the bottom half. The Hawkeyes put together two doubles and additionally scored on a passed ball to make the score 3-0.

The Lions answered the three-run Hawkeye first by scoring two runs to cut into the lead. Steranka led things off with a line-drive shot over the right field fence to put Penn State on the board. Later in the inning, freshman Aaron Novak (Ambler, Pa.) walked and then scored on an RBI single by freshman JJ White (Lansdowne, Va.). Iowa had a 3-2 lead.

The Hawkeyes added another run in the bottom of the fifth to up their lead to 4-2. Junior Cody Lewis (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) came in to relieve Walter in the sixth inning. Lewis was flawless as he pitched a perfect three innings to keep the game in check for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State will be back in action this Tuesday as it hosts Mount St. Mary's at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
