East Lansing, Mich. - The Penn State women's tennis team (12-10, 4-7) snapped a three-match losing streak, as it defeated the Michigan State Spartans (8-14, 0-11), 4-3, on Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions showed great resiliency as all of their singles victories came in matches that went into three sets, in addition to winning the doubles point.
Penn State bounced back from being swept in the doubles action on Friday versus No. 14 Michigan. Petra Januskova (Ottawa, Canada) and Chelsea Utting (Peachtree City, Ga.) started out strong, as the duo defeated Michaela Silesova and Nicole Herzog, 8-3, in the No. 1 bout.
However, the Spartans quickly evened the score, as Marina Bohrer and Dana Guentert bested Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and Fernanda Perrotta (Buenos Aires, Argentina), 9-7, on court two.
In the match that would decide the doubles point, Nina Sertic (Zagrab, Croatia) and Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) pulled out a nail-biter versus Katarina Lingl and Julianne Gruber, 9-7, to secure to point for the Nittany Lions.
In singles action, Bohrer jumped to an early lead and never looked back, as she upended Utting in the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-3, to tie the score at 1-1. On court three, Perrotta fell to Herzog, 0-6, 6-2, 6-1. With that victory, the Spartans took the lead for the first time, however it would not last long.
In the number one match-up, No. 76 Januskova lost a heartbreaker of a first set, 6-7, but bounced back to dominate Olga Chernova, 6-0, 6-1, in the second and third sets to claim the win and point.
On court five, Lingl defeated Sertic, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, but that would be the last time Michigan State held the lead, as Bedard and Sandor came through in the clutch for the Nittany Lions.
After losing the first set, 3-6, Bedard rebounded in the second and third, as she bested Guentert, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 6 spot, to tie the score.
With the match in Sandor's hands, the sophomore did not disappoint. Sandor won the first set 6-4, but struggled in the second, 1-6. The third set turned out to be an intense battle, but Sandor shined as she claimed a 7-6 (7-1) victory to give Penn State the win.
This marks the end of regular season play for the Nittany Lions. Penn State will travel to the Big Ten Championships starting on Thurs., April 26 in Columbus, Ohio in search of the program's first Big Ten Tournament title.
