Penn State in Tie for Sixth at Big Ten Championships

FRENCH LICK, Ind. - The Penn State women's golf team completed the first round of the Big Ten Championships in a tie for sixth place in French Lick, Ind., Friday. The Nittany Lions carded a 21-over-par 309 on the par-72, 6,156-yard Donald Ross Course at the French Lick Resort. Penn State is two strokes behind fifth-place Northwestern in the 6-count-4 tournament format.

Freshman Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.) paced the Nittany Lions and birdied three holes to finish the opening round in a tie for sixth place with a 2-over-par 74. Sophomore Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) registered three birdies of her own and finished one stroke behind Archambault with a 75, leaving her in a tie for 11th place.

Two Nittany Lions posted matching scores as freshman Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.) and junior Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio) each notched scores of an 8-over-par 80. The two golfers finished the day in a tie for 41st place. Ransone recorded three birdies, while Elliott birdied the par-4 17th hole.

Junior Jamie Lavin (Deerfield, Ill.) tied for 50th place carding an 82 in the first 18 holes. Freshman Erin Michel (Mason, Ohio) rounded out the Penn State field in a tie for 66th place with a score of 86.

No. 19 Ohio State and defending Big Ten champion No. 23 Michigan State lead the conference field after each posting a 10-over-par 298. Illinois' Nora Lucas and Michigan State's Caroline Powers each notched an even-par 72 in the opening round to top all players.

The second round of the 54-hole tournament will begin with tee times at 9 a.m. on Saturday (April 28).
