STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team concluded the 36th Annual Rutherford Intercollegiate at the 7,202-yard, par-71 Penn State Blue Course in fifth with a team-total of 920 (304-305-311), Sunday.
After finishing out round two early Sunday morning, the 14-team field was set for the slated 10:00 a.m. shotgun start for the final round.
At the end of the round, Bowling Green was announced as the tournament champion with a three-round score of 901 (303-297-301). The Falcons concluded 19 strokes ahead of host Penn State.
Freshman Jens Talbert(Little Rock, Ark.) posted the best individual score for Penn State. With a 227 (74-73-80) total, Talbert finished tied for ninth, just eight strokes behind IUP's Brad Boyle who clinched the individual title.
In the final round, senior Tommy McDonagh(East Norwalk, Conn.) led the Penn State squad with a 1-over-par score of 72. McDonagh posted a 229 (77-80-72) to finish tied for 15th.
Junior Jay Woodward (Bridgeport, W.Va.) carded rounds of 76-75-80 (231) to tie for 21st. With a 234 (77-78-79) total, freshman Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) tied for 30th. Sophomore Shane Stewart(Dublin, Ohio) posted rounds of 82-79-81 (242) to tie for 61st.
Junior Ernesto Marin(Miami, Fla.) had the best individual-competitor finish. With a 229 (81-74-74), Marin tied for 15th.
At the completion of the Rutherford, the Nittany Lions will play in one more tournament, the Hawkeye-TaylorMade Invitational, April 14-15, before heading to the Big Ten Championship at the end of the month.
