COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In a rain-shortened contest, Penn State baseball dropped a 7-3 game to the Maryland Terrapins on Wednesday evening in five innings. The game was marked official since 4.5 innings were completed.
In the top of the third inning, junior Elliot Searer (Lewistown, Pa.) started things with a walk. Senior Sean Deegan (Readington, N.J.) ripped a screaming doubled down the left field line to advance Searer to third. Senior Joey DeBernardis (Lake Zurich, Ill.) finished things with a two-run single to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Terrapins put up a seven-spot to take a 7-2. Maryland's first seven batters reached safely in the inning. Freshman Casey Kulina (Hummelstown, Pa.) came in to relieve senior Mike Franklin (Harleysville, Pa.).
Deegan ripped his eighth homer of the season in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Terrapin lead to 7-3. However, that would not be enough as the game ended after the fifth inning due to a downpour in College Park.
Penn State returns to Happy Valley on May 11, 12 and 13 for the final home series of the year against Illiinois. Nittany Lion baseball will be honoring a ticket exchange with Penn State softball as both teams are home that weekend. All ticket stubs bought at softball can be used for free entry at baseball and visa versa. PSU softball hosts OSU on Friday at 4 p.m. for a doubleheader while Penn State baseball hosts Illinois on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday softball is at 1 p.m. for Senior Day, while baseball continues its three-game series Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday afternoon (1 p.m.). The ticket stubs can be used any day of either game. Penn State baseball's Senior Day will be on Sunday.
