UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - Seven members of the Penn State swimming and diving teams were named to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division I Scholar All-America Team. Additionally, three members of the women's team received Honorable Mentions.
In addition, both Penn State squads received 2012 Scholar All-America Team Honors for collectively earning a 3.0 GPA or higher. The women's team averaged a 3.46 GPA, while the men recorded a 3.10 GPA.
The All-Americans for the men's team are Brian Alden (Lansdale, Pa.), Scott Marino (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Matthew Salig (Downingtown, Pa.). For the women, Merritt Krawczyk (Kingwood, Texas), Katie Pulos (Rosemont, Pa.), Erin Thomas (Bangor, Maine) and Chelsea Weedman (Poway, Calif.) all earned spots on the All-America Team. Amy Modglin (Fort Myers, Fla.), Allie Roberts (Emmaus, Pa.) and Gabi Shishkoff (Franklin, Mass.) each earned Honorable Mentions.
Marino completed his second and final NCAA Championship appearance this past spring with an honorable All-American performance in the 400 IM. He is the school's all-time record-holder in the 200 and 400 IM events. Most recently, Marino qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials for the 200 and 400 IM.
A member of the record-breaking 200 medley relay squad (1:25.61), Alden anchored the team and reached the NCAA Championship Final to place eighth and earn All-America honors for the second straight year (2011, 2012). Salig also appeared at the NCAAs, taking part in the butterfly events and 200 freestyle in his first appearance. The returning junior joined Marino at the U.S. Olympic Trials, competing in the 200 fly.
Returning as a senior for the Nittany Lions, Krawczyk most recently qualified as the No. 16 seed (2:15.96) in the 200 IM semifinal for the U.S. Olympic Trials. She earned first team All-Big Ten recognition this past season, and was also part of the Big Ten champion 400 medley relay team.
Weedman joined Krawczyk at the Olympic Trials, competing in the 200 and 400 IM, as well as in the 200 fly. The sophomore made her first ever NCAA finals appearance in 2012, finishing in 15th place with a time of 1:56.98, just off her lifetime best of 1:56.85.
Recent graduates Thomas and Pulos were members of the 400 freestyle relay, finishing with 3:16.16 for 11th place at the NCAAs, and qualifying for the B final. The duo also helped earn a gold medal and set a school record (3:16.12) at the Big Tens in February. Thomas and Pulos earned All-America honors during their careers for the Penn State women's swimming program, helping set school records in the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.64) and 400 freestyle (3:17.44).
Modglin, Roberts and Shishkoff each qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials. Modglin competed in the 100 and 200 back and the 400 IM, while Roberts competed in the 200 back and Shishkoff swam in the 200 back and 400 IM.
