UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Former Penn State men's volleyball player Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) has been named to the U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team's Olympic squad. In addition, Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) has been named one of eight replacements.
Anderson is one of six players who will be making his first appearance in the Olympic games. The U.S. Men secured their spot in the 2012 Olympic Games by winning the NORCECA Men's Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament on May 7-12. Most recently the team won their FIVB World League Pool to advance to Final Round play.
According to USAVolleyball.org, the U.S. Olympic Men's Volleyball Team is the defending Olympic Champion and the squad is currently ranked sixth in the world. The team will be coached by Alan Knipe who is in his fourth season at the helm.
Anderson, the 2008 AVCA National Co-Player of the Year, along with Holt led the Penn State men's volleyball program to its second NCAA title in 2008. Anderson, a two-time AVCA All-American, earned EIVA Player of the Year honors and was selected as the EIVA Championship Most Outstanding player that same season. He went on to pursue a professional volleyball career. Holt closed out his Penn State career in 2009 and was named the EIVA Player of the Year and garnered his second straight First Team AVCA honor.
