MIDLAND, Texas -
Carmen Sandor defeated Stefanie Weinstein of Nebraska, 9-8(4), to win the consolation final of the Racquet Club of Midland Collegiate Invitational while Petra Januskova was bested in the singles final.
After being knocked out in the first round by Texas A&M's Anna Mamalat, Sandor did not lose another singles match in the tournament. She defeated Britney Reed of Abilene Christian in the first round of the back draw, 6-3, 6-3, before ousting Sofya Malysheva of Texas Tech in the second round 6-3, 6-3.
In her first match today, Carmen bested the tournament's sixth seed, Nebraska's Janine Weinreich, 8-4 to earn a spot in the final later in the day where she faced Weinstein, who defeated Devan McCluskey in the other semifinal 8-6. In the consolation final, Sandor topped Weinstein 9-8(4) to bring home the consolation championship.
Petra Januskova was also in championship contention on the final day of the tournament. After winning her first three matches, she started off her Sunday facing Anna Mamalat in the semifinals. She defeated Mamalat 6-0, 6-1 before heading to the final. In the final, the Nittany Lion seeded at No. 2, squared up against the tournament's No. 1 seed, Natalie Beazant. Beazant got the best of Januskova winning 6-1, 6-1 but Januskova had the chance to deal out some payback soon after when they met in the doubles semifinal. In that doubles semifinal, the Nittany Lions' pair of Januskova and McCluskey were ousted by Beazant and Harmath from Rice, 8-5.
The Nittany Lions will be back in action next week when they take part in the Cissie Leary Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa.
