Tough Matches Highlight Day One at Ranked plus One Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team finished the first day of the Ranked plus One Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. The tournament is hosted by the University of Virginia. Tomas Hanzlik(Prague, Czech Republic) picked up his first win of the fall in singles. Day two of the tournament will take place on Saturday, starting at 9:00am with doubles matches.

Sophomore Tomas Hanzlik competed in the "Blue" Singles Draw as the 10th seed. In his first match, he defeated Memphis' David O'Hare 6-2, 6-0. Hanzlik will face Ole Miss' William Kallberg Saturday morning at 10:30. Kallberg is the second seed in the bracket.

In the "White" Singles Draw was senior Bryan Welnetz(Laredo, Texas), competing in the 15th spot. He dropped a 6-4, 6-4 battle to UNC-Wilmington's Rafael Aita. Welnetz will face the seventh seed, George Washington's Danil Zelenkov at noon on Saturday in the consolation round.

Hanzlik and Welnetz paired up in the "Red" Doubles Draw. They were the seventh seed entering their bracket. In the first round, they fell to UNC-Wilmington's Kosta Blank and Chris Cooprider 8-6. In the consolation round, they dropped an 8-5 decision to Middle Tennessee State's Ben Davis and Christopher Lang.

Entering the day as the first seed in the "Silver" Doubles Draw, Russell Bader(Austin, Texas) and Roman Trkulja(Toronto, Canada) lost a tough first round battle to Radford's Nick Sayer and Thomas Dehaen 9-7(4). They faced North Carolina's Esben Hess-Olesen and Nelson Vick in a consolation round, but fell 8-4.
