Penn State Concludes Second Day at Cissie Leary Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - Chelsea Utting led Penn State on the second day of play at the Cissie Leary Invitational. The three Nittany Lions went 5-5 in their matches today and will look to close out the tournament with more tomorrow.

Utting advanced to the second round of consolations after her first round opponent Jaime Yapp-Shing withdrew. In the second round she bested Kellen Alberstone of Bowdoin, 6-2, 6-7(5), 10-4. She will compete in the quarterfinals tomorrow against Akiko Okuda of Dartmouth.

Jacqueline Zuhse was ousted by Amber Washington, 6-2, 6-3 in her first consolation match, but then defeated Signe Lazdina 4-6, 7-5, 10-7 in her next match. Zuhse was knocked out of the consolation bracket after losing to Janet Liu in the following round. Sarah Henderson was ousted in the singles tournament in the round of 16 after losing 6-4, 7-5 to Lauren Frazier of Cornell.

In doubles action the team of Chelsea Utting and Jacqueline Zuhse defeated Sarah Gealar and Mikele Irazusta of Maryland 8-6 in the consolation bracket's round of 16. In the quarterfinals, they were ousted by Bowdoin's Kellen Alberstone and Tiffany Chang, 9-7. Sarah Henderson teamed up with Courtney Amos of Yale and defeated Alex Ion and Emma Whitfield of Penn, 8-3. They were knocked out in a close match in the next round of the back draw by Richmond's pair consisting of Anna Abadias and Elizabeth Sims, 9-7.

Final day matches continue at the Hamlin Tennis Center tomorrow morning at 9:15 as Utting will look to continue her run in the back draw.
