Klingler Named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week

Sept. 25, 2012

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - After an outstanding weekend performance against No. 24 Indiana and No. 17 Michigan, junior Ashtin Klingler (Selinsgrove, Pa.) has been named the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. Klingler led the No. 6 Penn State field hockey team to two victories over the Hoosiers and the Wolverines, scoring the game-winning goal in each contest. This is the first Big Ten weekly honor of her career, sharing the title with Danica Deckard of Ohio State University.

Klingler came away from the Big Ten opening weekend with six points on three goals. The forward's game-winner in the Indiana contest came just 21 seconds into the game, while her back-to-back goals against Michigan were scored within 10 minutes of each other in the opening fifteen minutes. Currently on a five-game point streak, Klingler sits at 16 points with seven goals and two assists. She has recorded points in seven of the Nittany Lions' 12 contests.

Hailing from Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, Klingler began her collegiate field hockey career at Syracuse before coming to Happy Valley for her sophomore season. She played in all 21 games in her rookie season for the Orange, recording three goals for six points. As a Lion, the forward appeared in all 23 games last season. Klingler has already surpassed her 2011 point-total, as she tallied six goals for 12 points in 629 minutes of action. She played a major part in the Big Ten Tournament win over Northwestern, netting two goals to put Penn State into the championship game.

Klingler has already racked up 456 minutes of playing time, starting in all 12 games for the Lions. The junior has recorded three game-winning goals to lead the squad, netting the game-winner against Lafayette on Sept. 2 for her first goal of the season.

Klingler and the Lions head to No. 10 Northwestern on Friday, Sept. 28, for a 3 p.m. Big Ten contest. Penn State returns home on Sunday, Oct. 7, when the squad takes on California at 11 a.m. at the Field Hockey Complex.
