2012 ITA A-A QualifyingSingles
TULSA, Okla. - Penn State men's tennis sophomore Tomas Hanzlik(Prague, Czech Republic) dropped a tough Qualifying Singles First Round match at the ITA Men's All-American Championships on Monday. Through the Prequalifying and Qualifying rounds, Nittany Lions picked up five total wins. The Qualifying Doubles bracket will start on Tuesday, with two different pairs representing Penn State.
In his first round match, Hanzlik battled fellow Big Ten player, Purdue's Aaron Dujovne. After dropping the first set 6-3, Hanzlik fell 7-6(7) in a tough second set. Over the weekend Russell Bader(Austin, Texas) and Bryan Welnetz(Laredo, Texas) both picked up a pair of singles wins in the Prequalifying round. Bader defeated TCU's William Edward-Stein(6-2, 6-3) and Texas' Jacoby Lewis(7-6, 7-5) to advance to the third round. However, he fell in that round to TCU's Facundo Lugones(3-6, 6-3, 7-5).
The senior, Welnetz, knocked off Clemson's Dominique Maden(6-2, 7-5) and New Mexico State's Luis Fernando-Ramirez(6-4, 6-4). In the third Round, Welnetz dropped a tough match against Florida State's Dominic Cotrone(6-1, 4-6, 6-3).
Roman Trkulja(Toronto, Canada)also picked up a singles win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Xavier's Brandon MacDonald.
Bader and Trkulja will combine in the Qualifying Doubles Round. Hanzlik and Welnetz will also pair up to compete in the bracket.
