Round 1 Results

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - After the first 18 holes of play at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorn Club, the Penn State men's golf squad is in 11th place out of 13 teams. The Nittany Lions shot a team total 294 on day one of the tournament.

Freshman Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) leads the way for the Nittany Lions, as he sits tied for 22nd in the individual rankings. Vartelas shot a par round of 72 on the day, making five birdies. Sophomore Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) trails Vartelas by a stroke and is currently tied for 39th with a first round score of 73.

Senior Anthony DeGol (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) shot a 74 and is tied for 50th through 18 holes. Senior Matthew Porter (Cortland, N.Y.) competed for the first time this season today in Johnson City, Tenn., as he is currently tied for 54th with a score of 75. Completing the Nittany Lion lineup was senior Jay Woodward (Bridgeport, W. Va.), who finished the first round of play placing 72nd on the individual leaderboard shooting a 7-over-par 79.

The team rankings are topped by Tennessee and Memphis, who are tied for first with an 8-under-par score of 280. Rick Lamb and Grant Milner lead all individuals, from Tennessee and Memphis, respectively.

The second round of play will begin tomorrow morning with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. The last 18 holes of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate will be played on Sunday, Oct. 14th
