KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Penn State men's tennis freshman Matt Barry(Lido Beach, N.Y.) and senior C.J. Griffin(Portland, Mich.) claimed the doubles title in the Smokey Draw as a result of a withdraw due to injury by Tennessee's Jarryd Chaplin and Mikelis Libietis. Griffin also competed in a consolation semifinal, but fell in a tough battle. The Nittany Lions earned five singles wins and three doubles wins over the weekend. Next weekend, Penn State will send members to the ITA Regionals in Charlottesville, Va.

Though they were not able to play the doubles final match, Barry and Griffin earned wins in two other matches over the weekend. On Friday, they defeated Wright State's Michael Lyzwa and Lauri Makikalli 8-1. They followed that up with a win in the draw semifinals against Xavier's Patrick Bandy and Phil Diaz 8-6.

The other doubles pair, Guanhua Chen(DaLian, China) and Chris Young(Melbourne, Australia) won their quarterfinal match on Friday in the Orange Doubles Draw. They earned an 8-4 victory over Xavier's Brandon MacDonald and Zachary Mueck. They fell 8-5 in the semifinal to Wright State's Gonzalo Blanco and Yvon Haessig.

In the Orange Singles Draw consolation semifinal, C.J. Griffin dropped a tough 4-6, 7-6, 11-9 battle to Xavier's Brandon MacDonald. Griffin advanced to the consolation semifinal by picking up two straight wins in the bracket. On Friday, Griffin defeated Eastern Kentucky's Joao Maio 6-0, 6-1. He followed that up a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory over Wright State's Hayden Joblin in the consolation second round on Saturday. He advanced to the semifinal after Louisville's Chris Simich retired due to injury.

Junior Chris Young earned two wins over the weekend and advanced to the White Singles Draw quarterfinal. On Friday, Young defeated Western Michigan's Stephen Payne(6-2, 6-1) in the first round and Chattanooga's Jackson Tresnan(6-4, 6-4) in the second round. In Saturday's quarterfinal, he fell in a tough battle to USC Upstate's Viktor Selander(7-6, 1-6, 7-5).

Guanhua Chen picked up a singles win in the Whites Singles consolation first round over Dayton's Colin Bernier 6-3, 6-1. Chen fell in the consolation second round to Western Michigan's Jimmy Beckwith 7-6, 6-2.

Freshman Matt Barry dropped a pair of singles matches against Tennessee's Jarryd Chaplin(6-3, 6-2) and Xavier's Brandon MacDonald(6-2, 6-2).
