KNOXVILLE, TENN., Oct. 14, 2012- The Penn State women's golf team won their second straight tournament, pulling away on day three to win the Mercedes Benz Intercollegiate. The Nittany Lions carded a third round total of 287, lowering their team score each day to finish the tournament with a total of 867, three over par. Penn State wound up winning by four strokes over second place, and host, Tennessee.
Junior Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) and senior Emily Ransone (Hilliard, Ohio) both finished the tournament at even par and finished in an impressive tie for seventh place in a tough field of golfers. Ceresko shot a third round 70, finishing the tournament carding a 216, while Ransone carded a final round 74 and also finished with a total of 216. Sophomore Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.) shot a final round 72 to finish the tournament at two over par, which put her in a tie for 11th place.
Coach Denise St. Pierre was very impressed and excited about the Nittany Lions performance. She went on to say, "This was a fantastic victory for this team. We played so well against 18 good teams, with many of them being ranked ahead of us. This certainly is one of the top wins for the history of Penn State golf."
The Nittany Lions are in action again when they head to Las Vegas, Nev. for the UNLV Invitational. The tournament begins on Sunday, Oct. 21 and continues through Tuesday, Oct. 23. Tee times are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. every day. This will be the last tournament for the women's golf team until the spring season begins.
