UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Fresh off its first NCAA Division I victory, the Penn State men's hockey team will travel to western New York for a pair of matchups against Buffalo State Friday, Oct. 19 and RIT Saturday, Oct. 20. Opening faceoff for Friday night's contest is set at 7 p.m., while puck drop against RIT is 7:35 p.m.
The Nittany Lions will enter the weekend with a 1-1-0 record after splitting its season-opening weekend. Following a 3-2 overtime loss against American International Friday, Oct. 12, Penn State responded with a thrilling 4-3 extra-frame triumph against the Yellow Jackets Saturday, Oct. 13.
Freshman forward David Glen (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.) recorded two goals, including the overtime game-winner, in the historic contest. Classmates Jonathan Milley (Gatineau, Que.) and Mark Yanis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) also scored Saturday night, while junior Taylor Holstrom (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and freshman Casey Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska) notched markers Friday.
The Penn State freshmen have already made an immediate impact during the early stages of the season. Seven of the team's nine skating rookies have recorded at least one point, paced by Glen's two goals and Yanis' one goal and an assist.
Friday night, the Nittany Lions will meet Buffalo State in the team's season-opening game. The Bengals, who return seven of their 10 leading scorers from a year ago, set a school record with 13 victories in 2011-12. Senior forwards Trevor McKinney (16g, 14a) and Drew Klin (13g, 12a) lead the Bengals offense, while two-time All-SUNYAC goaltender Kevin Carr returns between the pipes.
Following Friday night's game, Penn State will travel east on Interstate-90 for a matchup against Atlantic Hockey foe RIT. A sellout crowd of more than 10,000 is expected at Blue Cross Arena, home of the American Hockey League's Rochester Americans. The Tigers (1-1-0), who split with Michigan last weekend, are receiving votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine and USCHO.com polls.
