CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Penn State men's tennis team finished up the first round of the ITA Atlantic Regional main draw singles and doubles bracket. Three Nittany Lions won their first round matches to advance to Saturday's second round. Penn State also had two doubles teams advance out of the first round. Main draw play will continue Saturday, starting with singles matches at 9:00 a.m. and doubles matches at 5:30 a.m.
In his first round match, Chris Young(Melbourne, Australia) defeated George Washington's Viktor Svensson 7-5, 6-3. On Saturday, Young will face Virginia's Mitchell Polnet at noon.
C.J. Griffin(Portland, Mich.) faced William & Mary's Ben Hoogland in his first round match and won 7-5, 7-5. In the second round, Griffin will face George Washington's Nikita Fomin at 10:30 a.m.
Freshman Roman Trkulja(Toronto, Canada) defeated St. Joseph's Andreas Urrea 6-3, 6-2 in his first round match to advance to face VCU's Michal Voscek on Saturday.
In his first round match, Matt Barry(Lido Beach, N.Y.) dropped a tough 6-3, 7-5 battle to Liberty's Egon Samaai.
On Saturday, Russell Bader(Austin, Texas), Tomas Hanzlik(Prague, Czech Republic), and Bryan Welnetz(Laredo, Texas) will make their regional debuts. All three players received a bye on the Friday. Bader will face Morgan State's Duk Young Park at 9:00 a.m. Hanzlik will take on St. Joseph's Alex Veronis, also at 9:00. In his match, Welnetz will matchup against Virginia Tech's Marko Lovrinovic.
Chen and Young combined to knock off Georgetown's Charlie Caris and Casey Distaso 8-6 in their first round doubles match. On Saturday, they will face a team from George Mason.
Hanzlik and Welnetz also won their first round match with a dominating 8-1 performance against St. Joseph's Max Montague and Andreas Urrea. In the second round, they will matchup against a team from UMBC.
Bader and Trkulja will make their debut on Saturday against a team from Liberty. The duo received a first round bye.
