UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Head coach Jeff Tambroni will join the Upstate New York Chapter of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame on Sunday as one of eight members. The ceremony at the Links in Erie Village in East Syracuse, N.Y. will induct Tambroni along with seven other honorees.
Tambroni, a West Genesee, N.Y. native, is in his third year as Penn State men's lacrosse head coach. Tambroni led Hobart College to three NCAA Division III national titles (1989-91) as an All-American. He left Hobart as a three-time All-American, earning first-team honors in 1992 and a pair of second-team distinctions in 1990 and 1991.
During the 1990 campaign, Tambroni was named Most Outstanding Player of the national tournament. Tambroni amassed 202 points in his time at Hobart. Following his senior year, Tambroni received Hobart's Crook Family Award for leadership, outstanding play and sportsmanship proved to be superior. He also was named the Dobbin Memorial Award winner for most outstanding offensive player during the 1991 season, Tambroni's junior year.
Since then, Tambroni has held a successful career in collegiate coaching. He led the Cornell Big Red for 10 years as head coach leading the school to six NCAA quarterfinal appearances, three trips to the semifinals (2007, 2009 and 2010). During the 2009 campaign, Cornell went 13-4 and was the national runner-up.
In his time at Penn State, Tambroni has improved the team each season. The Nittany Lions finished 2011 with a 7-7 record in Tambroni's first year, a 5-win improvement from a 2-11 campaign in 2010. Last season, Penn State went 9-6 with its second consecutive trip to the CAA Tournament and was one of the first teams left out of the NCAA Tournament.
The seven other honorees joining Tambroni are Rich Barnes (SUNY Cortland), Jason Coffman (Salisbury College), Gary Gait (Syracuse), Ron Hill (Syracuse), Charlie Lockwood (Syracuse) and Doug Rowe (Baldwinsville HS).
