BLACKSBURG, Va. - Full Tournament Results
The Nittany Lions finished the third day of competition with five wins and Petra Januskova and Chelsea Utting heading to the quarterfinals tomorrow.
Januskova led the way for the Penn State winning all three of her matches on the day. She started off her day in doubles with Utting. The top seeded duo in the Region and played like it once again, defeating Maryland's Vroni Van Berlo and Sarah Gealar 8-3.
Januskova had to make a quick turnover after the doubles victory for her first singles match of the day which started shortly after. She faced Lana Robins of George Washington but easily sent her packing, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Januskova somehow managed to top her first two performances on the day winning her third and final match 6-0, 6-0, against Ellie Ball of Marshall. It was the second match of the tournament where Januskova didn't drop a game. The first was with Utting in their second round doubles match where they knocked off Doms and Batey of Temple, 8-0.
Carmen Sandor and Utting also won their first singles match today. Sandor topped Nika Khmolovska of Old Dominion in an exciting battle, 6-4, 6-4. Up next for Sandor was No. 3 Stephanie Nauta of Virginia. She dropped the first set before losing in a close second set and exited the tournament losing, 6-1, 6-4.
Utting ousted George Washington's Leah Pascarella in exciting fashion winning, 6-4, 6-4. Next up for Utting was the round of 16 where she was met with the challenge of No. 4 Erin Vierra of Virginia. She dropped a tough first set to the Cavalier and fell short in the following set dropping the match, 7-5, 6-2.
Despite the loss, Utting will be back in action tomorrow for quarterfinals of the doubles draw with Januskova.
Jacqueline Zuhse faced Virginia's Nauta also. In Zuhse's first and only match of the day, the No. 3 seed from Virginia topped her in a tough match winning, 6-1, 6-4. The loss ended the Nittany Lion freshman's impressive run of three straight singles victories in the tournament.
Katherine Whiteaway faced a tough test in her first match of the day where she went head-to-head with No. 5 Maria Belaya of William & Mary. Despite a good effort, she fell short and Belaya moved on winning 6-1, 6-0.
Devan McCluskey didn't fare as well as she had hoped in her first match either. She faced Maria Voscekova of Marshall but was unable to get the result she wanted. After being downed in the first set, she made a push in the second set but couldn't quite win the set and was ousted from the tournament, 6-2, 7-6(4).
